My name is Sophea Chhay and I am 39 years old. I was born in during the time of fighting between the government and the Khmer Rouge. My parents and I had to escape from the fight many times. Some times, we had to walk through the landmine fields to walk to new places.
When I was 10 years old, my first class at school was under a big tree with a black board. We used charcoal for writing at that time.
When we were studying we had to listen to the shells and bombs which could come towards us at any time.
When I finished secondary school. I moved to Siem Reap town to continue with my education. I had to leave my family and live alone. I had graduated in 2000, but I had to stop studying for a short time to save some money so that I could continue to university. I started university in 2007 and graduated in 2011.
I got married in 2007 and we have three children together. My wife has the hardest job of all taking care of our family. Her name is Nget Sokvy. I have three children, two boys and a girl. The oldest son called Thean An Chhay is 9 years old. My second child is my daughter who is 7.5 years old and she is called Lymean Chhay. My youngest son is called Thean Chhen Chhay and he is 3.5 years old.
My two oldest childrest study at public school in the morning and English school in the afternoon. Thean Chhen goes to an English pre-school in the morning. My only dream is for my children to have the best education as possible.
In 2004 and started working as a tour guide. I started as a freelance guide and continued until 2006. I was then asked to work for the Amansara Hotel in Siem Reap which is a luxurious and exclusive 5-star resort. I continued to work at the hotel until 2017.
After so many years, I think it’s now a good idea to leave and get some new experiences outside of Amansara, to get the opportunity to meet even more visitors to Siem Reap.
I want to help visitors to understand about the Khmer civilisation and culture.
I also want to help my country and develop the community from where I cam from with support for education by sharing some of my income and time and assisting charities. There are still many children living in remote rural areas that don’t go to school because their parents can’t support them.
